Testonic® Pesticide Residue Test Kit is a practical, colour-change-based test kit designed for rapid preliminary screening of organophosphate and carbamate pesticide residues that may be present on fruit and vegetable surfaces.
Suitable for apples, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and other fruits and vegetables, the test requires no measuring instrument. It works by preparing a surface sample with the extraction solution and evaluating the colour development on the test card.
Why Is Pesticide Residue Screening Important?
Crop protection products used in agriculture may leave residues on fruit and vegetable surfaces, depending on application conditions. Rapid pesticide screening helps consumers, producers and food businesses perform preliminary checks on potentially contaminated samples.
How to Perform the Pesticide Test
Prepare a sample collected from the fruit or vegetable surface using the extraction solution according to the instructions.
Apply the prepared sample extract to the test card and fold the card as instructed.
After the specified reaction time, compare the developed colour with the control to evaluate the result.
Kit Contents
- 20 single-use pesticide test cards
- Extraction solution
- Sample transfer pipette
- Instructions for use
*The card reaction and result evaluation take approximately 5 minutes. Sample preparation may increase the total procedure time. The kit provides qualitative preliminary screening for organophosphate and carbamate pesticides.
Testonic® Pesticide Residue Test Kit
Testonic® Pesticide Residue Test Kit is a practical, colour-change-based test kit designed for rapid preliminary screening of organophosphate and carbamate pesticide residues that may be present on fruit and vegetable surfaces.
Suitable for apples, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, leafy vegetables and other appropriate products, the kit enables preliminary sample assessment without laboratory instruments through enzyme inhibition-based test cards.
Analytical Principle
The test is based on the inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. Organophosphate and carbamate pesticides may reduce or inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity.
The enzyme and colour-development system on the test card produces a characteristic blue colour under suitable reaction conditions. Compounds that inhibit the enzyme may reduce or prevent colour development.
The colour developed on the sample card is compared with an appropriate control card to obtain a qualitative preliminary screening result.
Normal enzyme activity → Blue colour development
Partial enzyme inhibition → Weaker colour development
Strong enzyme inhibition → Very weak or absent colour development
The colour result does not independently identify or quantify a specific pesticide. Other enzyme-inhibiting substances present in food samples may also affect the reaction.
Importance and Applications of Pesticide Residue Screening
Crop protection products used in agriculture may leave residues on fruit and vegetable surfaces depending on application rates, timing, pre-harvest intervals and environmental conditions.
Rapid pesticide screening provides a practical preliminary assessment, particularly when many products need to be checked, helping identify suspicious samples for further laboratory analysis where necessary.
- Home users: Performing preliminary checks on the surfaces of purchased fruits and vegetables.
- Agricultural producers: Screening selected products before harvest and during production.
- Greengrocers and supermarkets: Conducting preliminary checks on fresh produce received from suppliers.
- Food processing facilities: Screening selected incoming raw material samples.
- Restaurants and catering businesses: Performing preliminary checks on fresh produce supplies.
- Wholesale markets and storage facilities: Conducting rapid screening during product reception and batch checks.
How to Perform the Pesticide Test
Collect a representative sample from the outer surface of the fruit or vegetable. Prepare and shake it with the specified amount of extraction solution according to the instructions.
Apply the specified amount of prepared extract to the white reaction area of the test card. After the pre-reaction period, fold the card along the marked line.
Open the card after the specified reaction time. Compare the developed colour with an appropriate control card.
Note: Sample quantity, extraction solution volume, pre-reaction time and post-folding incubation time must follow the instructions for use. Sample preparation may increase the total procedure time.

Interpretation of Results
The colour developed on the test card is evaluated by comparison with an appropriate control card. A valid control reaction should produce the expected blue colour development.
Blue colour similar to control
No significant enzyme inhibition is observed.
Weak blue colour
Partial inhibition or analytical interference may be present.
Absence of colour development
Strong enzyme inhibition is observed.
A negative result indicates that no significant enzyme inhibition was observed under the test conditions. It does not prove that the sample is completely free from all pesticides.
A suspicious or positive result indicates reduced enzyme activity. It does not conclusively identify or quantify a specific pesticide. Where necessary, confirmatory laboratory methods such as LC-MS/MS or GC-MS/MS should be used.
Analytical Interferences and Measurement Limitations
Acetylcholinesterase activity may be influenced not only by pesticides but also by the natural chemical characteristics of the sample. Results from certain fruits and vegetables therefore require careful interpretation.
- Acidity and pH: Extracts from acidic fruits such as lemons, oranges, mandarins and grapefruits may affect enzyme activity and colour development.
- Natural plant compounds: Phenolic compounds, sulfur-containing substances and certain plant metabolites may interfere with enzyme activity.
- Strong pigments: Dark-coloured fruits and vegetables may interfere with visual interpretation of the reaction colour.
- Sample preparation: Differences in extraction solution volume, sample ratio or incubation times may affect test repeatability.
- Differences between pesticides: Individual organophosphate and carbamate pesticides do not inhibit the enzyme equally. Test sensitivity may vary depending on the active substance.
- Measurement scope: The test does not cover all pesticide groups and does not independently identify or quantify specific pesticide compounds.
Unexpected results, particularly from acidic, strongly pigmented or naturally enzyme-inhibiting samples, should be repeated and confirmed by laboratory analysis when necessary.
