Testonic Ferro-Check™ is a Ferroxyl-based direct surface test kit developed to help rapidly identify localized free iron contamination and active iron-bearing areas on stainless steel surfaces.

Even when the general appearance of stainless steel equipment is clean and uniform, weld seams, heat-affected zones, ground areas, joints, cut edges, or surfaces that have come into contact with carbon steel may behave differently from the surrounding material.

Ferro-Check™ enables these critical areas to be tested directly and individually. Where active iron is present, the Ferroxyl reaction produces localized blue spots, stains, or visible blue coloration, helping the operator identify the exact position of the affected area.

Main question answered by the test:
Is localized free iron, foreign iron contamination, or an active iron-bearing area present on the stainless steel surface?

Why Use Ferro-Check™?

Surface problems on stainless steel do not always occur uniformly over a large area. In many cases, the first signs may be concentrated at weld seams, joints, ground areas, cut edges, or mechanically processed locations.

Foreign iron transferred from carbon steel tools, workbenches, grinding equipment, or fabrication processes may also be present only at isolated points.

Ferro-Check™ helps make these localized areas visible through a direct Ferroxyl reaction, allowing quality-control teams to focus immediately on the specific area that requires attention.

Localized Surface Control
Allows welds, joints, ground areas, and other suspicious locations to be evaluated individually.
Visible Blue Reaction
Active iron-bearing areas are indicated by localized blue spots, stains, or coloration.
Post-Weld Verification
Provides practical control of weld seams and adjacent processed areas after cleaning and passivation.
Suitable for Field Use
Supports rapid inspection of tanks, piping, process equipment, and stainless steel structures.

Why Is Localized Surface Inspection Important?

The condition of a stainless steel surface may vary from one location to another. Welding, grinding, cutting, and mechanical processing can locally alter the condition of the surface and its passive layer.

Foreign iron contamination may also affect only a small area rather than the entire component. For this reason, a localized test can provide valuable information exactly where fabrication or surface-treatment history suggests a higher probability of contamination.

Ferro-Check™ helps target critical locations directly, making surface verification more focused during fabrication, maintenance, commissioning, and post-passivation inspection.

The Ferro-Check™ difference:
Instead of evaluating a large surface as a whole, Ferro-Check™ focuses on localized areas where free iron contamination or active iron-bearing points are most likely to occur. The position of the reaction can be identified directly by the blue Ferroxyl coloration.

Why Are Weld Areas Frequently Checked?

During welding, stainless steel is exposed locally to elevated temperatures. The weld seam and surrounding heat-affected area may subsequently undergo cleaning, pickling, grinding, or passivation.

These zones can therefore have a different surface history from the rest of the equipment. Localized inspection after surface treatment helps verify critical areas before fabrication is completed or the equipment enters service.

Ferro-Check™ is particularly suitable for this purpose because the Ferroxyl reaction indicates the exact position of active iron-bearing points through localized blue coloration.

Advantages of Checking Critical Areas Individually

In a large tank, reactor, piping system, or fabricated structure, not every surface area carries the same probability of contamination. Weld seams, flanges, repaired areas, cut edges, and heavily processed surfaces may require greater attention.

Ferro-Check™ enables these locations to be checked individually and directly, helping inspection teams concentrate on the areas that matter most.

This makes the test particularly practical for stainless steel equipment manufacturers, welding and fabrication companies, maintenance teams, and passivation service providers.

Testonic™ Surface Treatment Verification Product Group

Stainless steel surface quality control may require different approaches for general surface inspection, extractable iron evaluation, and localized critical-point inspection. PassiCopper™, PassiFerro™, and Ferro-Check™ provide complementary solutions for these different requirements.

Product Control Method Main Control Question
PassiCopper™ Direct general surface control Does reactive free iron remain on the surface?
PassiFerro™ Extract obtained from a defined surface area Is extractable iron residue present on the surface?
Ferro-Check™ Localized direct surface control Is localized free iron or an active iron-bearing area present at a weld, joint, or suspicious location?
Practical selection:
For rapid general free-iron control directly on the surface, use PassiCopper™; for evaluation of iron extracted from a defined surface area, use PassiFerro™; and for localized inspection of welds, joints, ground areas, and other critical locations, use Ferro-Check™.

What Does Using the Products Together Provide?

A single surface inspection method may not address every quality-control requirement on stainless steel equipment.

PassiCopper™ provides rapid direct general surface control, PassiFerro™ evaluates iron extracted from a defined surface area, and Ferro-Check™ focuses on welds, joints, and other critical localized areas.

For companies that manufacture stainless steel equipment, perform welded fabrication, carry out passivation in-house, or provide surface quality-control services, using these products together can create a more comprehensive and targeted surface verification system.
